Reflections Upon Watching Spiderman 2

In this film, Spider Man battles Dr. Octopus (formerly Otto Octavius), an eight-limbed shadow self. He also, more prosaically but equally poignantly, batters his inability to pay his rent, be on time, finish his paper, help his aunt, be a friend, confess his love or find himself. Why is it that the villians we are fighting are always ourselves?
And why didn’t someone tell that boy not to mix his whites with his colors?
