Natural deoderant in August

Ever since the news came out that aluminum gives you Azheimers, I’ve been worried. Dementia is not included in my retirement plans (although yachts, islands and learning to tango are). So I don’t cook in aluminum pans (did anyone ever do this?) or lick aluminum foil but then there comes the sticky, smelly issue of antipersperant, which has as a main ingredient: aluminuium.

I can do natural, I thought. I can be holistic, Whole Foods type natural fibres person. So I now have a lovely, almost mystical looking crystal which is supposed to magically keep all those odor-causing bacteria at bay when you wave it at your pits — or your feet, apparently, although I have no first hand data on that yet.

It sort of works, in an optimistic, winter-weather way. But no crystal formed by person or geological force can possibly withstand the pressures of an East Coast August. It’s just too much to ask of a salt-stick. So now I’m in a bind.

Alzheimers or smelly pits? The eternal conundrum.

“They” are now saying aluminum doesn’t cause Alzheimer’s, so I say, deod-away!

No, no, there is an alternative! As a veteran sweater, I have always thought that preventing your sweat glands from doing their thing was really unnatural. That antiperspirant is now found to be unhealthy doesn’t surprise me in the least. However, there is a difference between antiperspirant and deoderant. Most drugstore products are both, but if you look carefully, you will find deoderants that are NOT antiperspirants. I use one made by Speed Stick. I still sweat, like a human being is supposed to, but I don’t smell bad doing it. Try it!

I wouldn’t worry about aluminum. It seems the experts don’t hold the theory in much regard these days.

But don’t worry. You’re still welcome in my house, even if you don’t use deodorant.

I’ve got an alum stone, which simply neutralises odour – I find it works fine, but then we don’t really get summer over here!
