These (Lorna’s Laces in Child’s Play socks knit from the toe up with short row heels in a size something or other) are now safely in the post on their way to be given to some lucky pair of feet. I hope (oh I hope) he likes them.
It is interesting that as soon as I give something I knit away, I can see all its glaring flaws so clearly. Well, glaring to me. Like Christina’s hat. I thought it was fine until I saw it on her head when I noticed a couple of small mistakes and cringed. Not like anyone will really notice. And these socks — I ripped them down several times to fix small errors that I would have let slide had they been for me. This is another excellent reason not to knit for money. I would worry too much about the apparent or actual perfection of the knitted object.
I did enjoy doing these and the Lorna’s sock yarn is lovely and soft and does great color things — but I would have liked to do a better job. More specifically, while I think the toe up method toe is a thing of beauty, I am less convinced by the toe up heel and might prefer the way the heel looks in a cuff down sock. I also think that having to cast off so loosely made the top of the cuffs look a bit ruffled, although that disappears when the socks are actually on. But I’ll do better next time.
I celebrated their completion by knitting this, although like socks, I’d better cast the next one on quickly or I will have to keep one hand in my pocket the rest of the winter.

This is one of a soon to be pair of Urban Rustic gloves from the current Knitty, knit in Cascade Pastaza (50% llama 50%wool) in color 69). It seemed really short when I had finished, probably due to my complete disregard of gauge. Again. So I improvised a little flared cuff which I like, although I also liked the driving glove look of the original. Still, check out that button. Cool, hey?
In other knitting news, I’m currently experiencing a karmic crisis with a hat for Ed. I never rip out, or hardly ever and this hat has been begun and ripped at least three times. But dammit, it’s going to get done. Then on to my list of 29.5 knitting projects for 2006.

Like those gloves! Very stylish..my god, you are a one-woman knitting machine!
