The Fall (and Rise) of the House of Virus
We have been a slightly icky house the last few days. Daniel came home from school early, cheerfully announcing that he was “funny in his tummy” and an hour later threw up in his bed. An hour after that he threw up on the couch, where he had transplanted his sick self to. So two baths, three loads of laundry, several dozen go-rounds with carpet cleaner and other cleaning products, a small sippy cup of water and two chapters of The People In Pineapple Place (which is a wonderful book) and a very interrupted night of weird dreams and Daniel having hysterics at 3 a.m. because “The clocks are wrong, they’re wrong! It’s morning I know it is” here we are. Oh, and add to that Helena suddenly forgetting how to use the toilet and peeing on the floor twice yesterday. Which multiplied the laundry.
She had this same bug (oh let it be the same bug and not a new bug) last week but she did her vomiting at night. In her bed, on the floor — on the door frame (which I didn’t find until later). Now she has a hacking great smoker’s cough and a sulky expression because Daniel got to stay home from school.
I have the snuffles, Ed is on antibiotics after his tooth extraction a couple of weeks ago and if we had a cat, the cat would no doubt be ill. But we don’t, so that’s a saving grace. But I have managed to have a shower, this is the last day of Ed’s drugs, Daniel is cheerfully ransacking the bookcases (so it looks like we’ve been burgled by a very literate burglar) to find something new to read and Helena went off to school with two bananas in her fist so that she could do the banana-slicing job, which would be neither “too interesting or too difficult,” which she decided was a good thing.

This totally made me laugh:
“…and if we had a cat, the cat would no doubt be ill. But we don’t, so that’s a saving grace.”
Atta girl Stunt Mother, amidst the laundry and vomit, you found a silver lining.
You have such a wonderful attitude. Most people would be sitting in the middle of the floor, bitching and crying about all the work and mess – and you are able to keep your sanity and your wit in the middle of it all. Bravo! (This too shall pass – probably not soon enough.)
OMGOSH…. I am sorry I really shouldn’t be thinking… “Thank goodness we are past the potty training, the little ones with colds… “
Will have to keep you on favorites and see what you tackle next!!
I do enjoy your blog..
I’m sorry to hear about all the illness . . .and your having to clean it up. I hope everyone is well soon!
I must say, as a preschool teacher, that you are managing to raise some fantastic and intelligent children. That is, from what you write in your blog. Sorry about the illness part but, hey, there’s always that, right?
