Mother’s Day

My own mother dislikes Mother’s Day. Although as children we made cards, or tried to make breakfast or other such, and although she received these offerings kindly, she left us in no doubt that she disliked the holiday. If every day isn’t mother’s day, she would say, no day is. Don’t think that you can get round me by being nice one day out of the year.

I sort of see her point. But then, no amount of nice or cards or flowers or whatever could possibly give back to a mother what she gives. And it’s not supposed to. We don’t mother for the rewards or the boxes of bonbons. We mother because we must. Because our bodies and minds realigned themselves when the children entered the house and we mother them because they need us, and because we are now, consciously or not, pouring back no- pouring forward what we ourselves were given.

So I can’t wish my mother a happy mother’s day — but I’m glad to have my children and husband bring me breakfast in bed and give me kisses — because I love them and it makes them happy too, to celebrate my place in their life. And though I sometimes sit in this place very reluctantly and with the biggest pout on my face you ever saw, I am glad to be here in this mother world.

Happy mother’s day.

General spoiling is good. If they start buying you ironing boards and anglegrinders soemthing is seriously wrong.

Hope it was a lovely lovely day.

It is a fine balance but I agree that nothing can give back what a mom gives; you just get moments – wonderful moments that get you through the pouts. Happy Mother’s Day to you too!
