Ho ho hold it right there
I love Christmas. It’s probably my favourite holiday, even more (what am I saying. WAY more) than my birthday. BUT (and this is a big but, almost bigger than the post-Halloween top of my own legs) I am not fond of Christmas arriving in the stores before Halloween has even come and gone. I clearly have passed that prejudice onto my children. In fact, I may have even done so on purpose. Let’s not wear the holiday out, people!
So Helena and I were in some craft store and they had their Christmas stuff up. “What,” exclaimed the five year old beside me “is the world coming to? Christmas already?!”
I refrained from shouting “Right on, sister!” and just nodded a bit. We found our large pads of drawing paper and went to pay. Then Helena told the lady at the till that they’d put their Christmas stuff up a bit early.
“Ah yes,” said the lady. “But Santa needs a lot of help so we have to get started early. It’s not that long until Christmas now.”
Helena eyed her. “Santa will have to wait,” she said, “until after Thanksgiving.”
Right on, sister.
Last year I was double posting: once about how our mundanity is our humanity
and then about a deep, disturbing dilemma: cute or scary? We still have the glasses somewhere.

I agree. We are resisting, big time, even though we don’t have any Halloween or Thanksgiving to tide us over. Christmas started appearing in September, after the summer vacation. It’s sick.
Good on Helena.
So so true. I do NOT begin celebrating Christmas until after Thanksgiving. The time from Halloween to Christmas is my very favorite chunk of the year. I take it one day (and one holiday) at a time.
That’s right, let Christmas get here in its own good time. Time races by enough as it is and certainly doesn’t need any help.
Have you started you Christmas shopping yet?
I’ve got a meme for ya. Might come in handy later this month!
It’s good when you pass your (absolutely reasonable) opinions about the proper way to do things onto the kids. I love it when I hear them utter things I’ve said.
At least it shows they’re listening!
